Abstract

The metabolic syndrome is a common disorder that results from the increasing prevalence of obesity and the pathophysiology seems to be attributable to insulin resistance. This condition is related to glomerular sclerosis and renal failure through several mechanisms, including environmental factors, sympathetic overactivity, stimulation of the Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone System and a proinflammatory state.
The increased risk for type 2 Diabetes and cardiovascular disease demands therapeutic attention for those at high risk. The main approach is weight reduction and increased physical activity.
